In the United Corporations of America, which has a problem with overpopulation and an unemployment rate of 99.993 percent, the Death Race has two purposes: it is both a form of entertainment and a method of population control. The current round of the Death Race is taking competitors from Old New York to New Los Angeles, and the defending champion is Frankenstein. Competing against Frankenstein are a genetically engineered athlete named Jed Perfectus, a hip-hop star named Minerva Jefferson, a female cultist named Tammy the Terrorist, and an evil, black, artificially intelligent, self-driving automobile named ABE. Each participant in the race is given a broadcaster who acts as their proxy and brings the viewers into the action of the race via the use of virtual reality. Frankenstein is instantly turned off by his proxy, Annie Sullivan, and dismisses both her efforts to interview him and her proposals to let his opponents pass him by.
Alexis Hamilton's rebels set traps for the drivers as they race along the East Coast. When it comes to assassinating cult members, Tammy and Minerva are head-to-head rivals. ABE malfunctions, kills its proxy, and abandons the race to discover its true purpose.. As a first step, Hamilton has her spies Annie and Mary go in on a mission to kill Frankenstein. She is unable to enthrall him because he is only concerned with winning. However, Perfectus will tell his devotees to end their lives because of Frankenstein's long life span.
There are several gun-toting locals in this area on Day 2 of the raceroute.' .'s Tammy sends a suicide bomber to murder Chi Wapp, Minerva's proxy. His automobile becomes trapped in the cornfield as Frankenstein takes another shortcut on the way. In the meanwhile, Frankenstein takes on a bunch of Resistance Ninjas in order to earn an additional point. Annie confesses to being a rebel at the second checkpoint and tries to recruit Frankenstein. He curses the rebels and the government, stressing that his main goal is winning the race, a sentiment he repeats throughout the film. It is revealed to Annie at a bar by the educated intellectual, Minerva, that she is a stereotype of a hip-hop artist in order for her to live. A jealous Perfectus attacks Frankenstein as he returns to his apartment, but Annie intervenes and rescues him from certain death.. In the meanwhile, it is found that Hamilton and the Chairman are working closely behind the scenes.
During the third day of the race, the government creates "authorized" routes to keep the drivers safe from the Resistance's ambush attempts. Annie lends a hand to Frankenstein, whose right arm was broken during the battle with Perfectus. To avert Tammy's suicidal proxy, Minerva follows her and jumps over a precipice. The ABE returns and runs Tammy into the wall, where she self-destructs, killing her and Minerva in the process. Hamilton and her rebels are wiped out by Frankenstein and Annie as Perfectus takes a shortcut to the finish line. When Perfectus loses control of his automobile, he crashes into the VR control booth, which is where the action takes place. To his admirers, Frankenstein sends a message stating that the Chairman himself is worth 1,000 points before reaching the finish line. After murdering the Chairman, Frankenstein invites the viewers to leave their virtual world behind and participate in their own Death Race, to the pleasure of the crowd. From afar, Frankenstein and Annie see a nation descending into anarchy and recommend that it should be repopulated after the turbulence has subsided.

How did Death Race 2050 come to be?
Corman got the idea for a sequel to the first movie when an Italian reporter told him that The Hunger Games and Death Race 2000 had a lot in common. Corman talked to Universal Pictures, which made the modern remake (which Corman thought got rid of too much of the original's political commentary), about putting back the original's dark satire. Corman said, "You did a good job, but you took out the killing of pedestrians and the themes of a broken society."
Filming started while Corman was in his late eighties and coincided with the 2016 presidential election in the United States.
